Fire and Ice (Contrast Therapy)

What is contrast therapy?
Contrast therapy, or contrast water therapy, is a recovery method that alternates between hot and cold temperatures. Its origins trace back to ancient Greece and Rome, where hot and cold baths treated health issues. In the 19th century, it evolved into a modern therapeutic technique in hydrotherapy. Today, athletes use contrast therapy to relieve inflammation and pain, typically by spending a few minutes in the sauna followed by an ice bath, known as fire and ice.

The benefits of contrast therapy
Using a sauna and ice bath together can enhance blood circulation, lower inflammation, speed up muscle recovery, and boost mood. The sauna's heat opens blood vessels, leading to better blood flow and reduced inflammation.

The cold from the ice bath tightens blood vessels, improving blood flow and reducing muscle pain. Alternating between hot and cold helps recovery and lowers the chance of injury.

Hot or cold first?

Sauna use is recommended since heat and cold affect the body in similar ways, a practice seen in Nordic cultures for thousands of years. To boost metabolism, it’s best to start with heat, then switch to cold, and finally allow your body to warm up again naturally.

Saunas and ice baths are effective for recovery and health. Saunas help heart health, while ice baths reduce muscle soreness and inflammation. Using both together as contrast therapy can boost circulation and recovery. It's essential to consult a doctor or physical therapist before starting contrast therapy, especially if you have health issues.
